My personal experience with spiritual direction began during one of the most difficult times I ever faced. Through Scripture reading, prayer, journaling, and weekly conversations with my spiritual director - the Lord met me, healed my wounds, and redeemed my pain.

Oftentimes we feel distracted and disconnected - standing at a crossroads in life - in need of a safe place to talk about spiritual questions and the internal movements of our soul.
Relational hurts mount up and leave us feeling anxious, angry, or just sad. We lose our way, and we wonder where God is in the midst of our suffering and unmet desires.
Love feels broken and disordered. We attach to worldy things, seek the approval of people, or continue in unhealthy patterns rather than walk in freedom and peace. We begin to withdraw and feel alone, experiencing much less than God graciously desires to give us. Without wise and compassionate guidance, we continue to plateau and regress.

A spiritual director is a companion along the Way of Jesus offering a listening, prayerful, encouraging presence to another while they walk together with God.
Spiritual Direction, and in particular The Ignatian Exercises, helps us grow in interior freedom from sin and disordered loves so that we can respond more generously to the call of God in our life. It is an invitation into an intimate encounter with God, revealed in Jesus Christ, so that by the ministry of the Spirit, we can learn to think and act more like Christ.
We need, as the ancients were fond of saying, a good spiritual guide who can lead us to a greater knowledge of God that in turn leads to a greater knowledge of self - and therefore a deeper union with God and an ever-closer conformity with the Gospel in every aspect of our lives.

I have over 28 years of experience in leadership and ordained ministry - serving as a pastor, church planter, regional leader, and missionary bishop in the Anglican Communion. I’ve planted two churches, started several non-profits, and taught numerous training workshops. I’m a certified leadership coach, spiritual director, and wilderness survival instructor. I’ve been married to Amanda for 24 years, and we have three children 20, 16, and 14 (and two Australian shepherds).
